Balloon Land (aka The Pincushion Man) – 1935 Ub Iwerks ComiColor Cartoon
Balloon Land (also released as The Pincushion Man) is a 1935 American animated short produced and directed by Ub Iwerks as part of his ComiColor Cartoons series. Released on September 30, 1935, this ~7-minute Cinecolor short takes place in a whimsical world where every resident, animal, tree, rock, and building is made of balloons.
Two newly inflated balloon kids ignore warnings and wander into the forest, where they encounter the terrifying Pincushion Man (voiced by Billy Bletcher) — a sinister, pin-studded villain who delights in popping everything in sight while singing his gleeful villain song (“I’m the old Pincushion Man, terror of Balloony Land…”). Chaos ensues as he invades Balloon Land, only for the balloon citizens to fight back in classic 1930s cartoon style.
Iwerks (the legendary animator who co-created Mickey Mouse with Walt Disney) packed the short with inventive visuals, celebrity caricatures , and that signature mix of lighthearted charm and darkly comic menace that makes pre-Code-era cartoons so memorable. It’s long since entered the public domain and remains a cult favorite among animation fans.
